From the President – October 2017
This month our WONCA President, Professor Amanda Howe, whisks us though her recent very busy travel schedule. Starting with her time in Pretoria, at the WONCA Africa Region conference, she then highlights time in Hong Kong (at the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians) and then on to USA to attend the annual meeting of the American Academy of Family Physicians, WONCA’s largest Member Organization. As if that were not enough, she then outlines future travel to Lebanon, Paris and Washington.

WONCA Rural Africa (WoRA) Launched
As mentioned in the President’s report, WONCA Rural Africa (WoRA) was launched during the recent WONCA Africa Region conference in Pretoria, South Africa. Under the chairmanship of Dr Dan Abubakar, WoRA aims to represent rural doctors in the Africa region, encourage networking between rural doctors and to collaborate with other regions and organizations involved in rural health. This follows on from the very successful launch of WORSA, the equivalent regional organization in the South Asia region.

WONCA Eastern Mediterranean Region Meets WHO EMRO
WONCA’s East Mediterranean region (EMR) delegates recently met with the WHO EMRO Regional Director and his team in Cairo, Egypt. The participants agreed about the importance of collaborative work among WHO and WONCA to reorient towards Universal Health Care, and bring family medicine as a vehicle, conducting national workshops will help countries to develop national action plans to scale up family practice working in two parallel paths – the fast track and the long term plans taking into consideration, approaching universities and higher education ministries.

WONCA EMR Conference 2018 – Abstract deadline extended to 1st November
The 2018 WONCA Eastern Mediterranean Region conference will take place in Kuwait City from 1st to 3rd March, and the organizers invite authors to submit abstracts for oral, poster and workshop presentations. There is still time to submit an abstract for this event, as the deadline has been extended to 1st November. Submissions are accepted online. Position Vacancy – Ulster University Foundation Dean of School of Medicine and Professor
Ulster University is establishing a Graduate Entry Medical School with a particular emphasis on primary care and rural health, with primary care planned to occupy some 30% of the curriculum. The University wishes to appoint an outstanding individual to lead development of the school. The appointment to Professor will be a permanent appointment, whist the Foundation Dean appointment will be for a period of four years in the first instance.
